"In the Crack of the Dawn"

In the Crack of the Dawn is the third exhibition organized by POOL project, featuring works from the collections of Maja Hoffmann and Michael Ringier. Arthur Fink curated the show.

The show’s title is borrowed from a 1991 comic book by Lawrence Weiner and Matt Mullican. In the Crack of the Dawn describes the transition from night into day as the sun slowly rises.  The title serves as a metaphor for a specific mode of perception: in the early morning hours, the subject begins to perceive the world around them, and attempt to convey, through structures, the objects they encounter. The subject is yet to transition into their habitual state of awareness. Sensory data do not integrate with a stable system of meaning, and the boundaries between dream and reality, object and subject are not yet clearly demarcated.

In the Crack of the Dawn stands for a state of awareness in which symbolic societal structures appear fictional, and the possibility of reconfiguring such systems suddenly presents itself. At the same time, this threshold state opens up a space where traumatic experiences articulate themselves, and the sheer physicality of the surroundings penetrates the subject.

The exhibition In the Crack of the Dawn presents artistic positions that grapple with the thresholds of human subjectivity, and which dismantle media constructions of visual and textual codes of communication.  Works in the exhibition explore these visual codes and their impact on our worldview: they transform society’s mechanisms of image production, uncover the identity politics behind them, and reconfigure them. The work of American artist Matt Mullican (Santa Monica, *1951) plays an important role here. Mullican continually engages with the question of what constitutes the human psyche, as well as its faculty to produce realities through establishing socially binding symbols. Mullican’s own cosmology functions as a tool for analyzing images and their impact on experience, knowledge and identity.

In the Crack of the Dawn ist die dritte Ausstellung im Rahmen des Projekts POOL mit Werken aus den Sammlungen von Maja Hoffmann und Michael Ringier. Die Ausstellung wird vom Zürcher Kurator Arthur Fink in Dialog mit seinem Mentor Ulrich Loock (Freier Kurator, Professor und Kunstkritiker) entwickelt und realisiert.

Die Ausstellung leiht sich ihren Titel von einem Comic, den Lawrence Weiner und Matt Mullican im Jahr 1991 gemeinsam verfasst haben. In the Crack of the Dawn bezeichnet den Schwellenraum zwischen Tag und Nacht bei Sonnenaufgang. Der Titel dient als Metapher für einen spezifischen Wahrnehmungszustand: In den frühen Morgenstunden beginnt das Subjekt, die Welt wahrzunehmen und versucht, die ihm erscheinenden Gegenstände in Strukturen zu überführen. Es befindet sich noch nicht im Zustand des Tag-Bewusstseins. Die Sinnesdaten sind nicht in ein stabiles Bedeutungssystem integriert und die Grenzlinien zwischen Traum und Wirklichkeit, zwischen Objekt und Subjekt noch nicht klar gezogen. In the Crack of the Dawn steht für einen Bewusstseinszustand, in dem symbolische Systeme der Gesellschaft fiktionalisiert erscheinen und sich Möglichkeiten eröffnen, jene neu zu konfigurieren. Zugleich geht aber in diesem Zustand auch ein Raum auf, in dem sich traumatische Erfahrungen artikulieren und die rein physische Umgebung auf das Subjekt eindringt.

In the Crack of the Dawn zeigt künstlerische Positionen, an denen eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Grenzbereichen der menschlicher Subjektivität stattfindet und medial konstruierte Bild- und Sprachsysteme demontiert werden. Die Werke in der Ausstellung thematisieren visuelle Codes der Medien und deren Auswirkungen auf unsere Weltsicht. Sie transformieren die gesellschaftlichen Bildapparate, untersuchen die dahinterliegenden identitätspolitischen Programme und konfigurieren sie neu.

Eine zentrale Rolle spielt dabei das Werk des US-amerikanischen Künstlers Matt Mullican (Santa Monica, *1951). Er beschäftigt sich kontinuierlich mit der Frage nach der Konstitution der menschlichen Psyche und deren Fähigkeit, Realität durch die Errichtung von sozial verbindlichen Symbolen zu produzieren. Mullicans Kosmologie dient als System, mit dem Bilder und deren Einfluss auf Erfahrung, Wissen und die Identität analysierbar werden.
